Persuasive Writing

This term we have been learning about persuasive writing. I chose to do my writing about why kid should get out doors more. Here it is.

Why Kids Should Get Outdoors More

These days technology does everything for us! It makes everyone so lazy! In this text I will tell you why kids should get outdoors and should stop relying on technology.

Firstly, you get more exercise. To get more exercise you could: play sport, run around the block or if you have a dog you can take it for a walk.

Secondly, you will be happier. It is scientifically proven that light can change how you’re feeling, more light means more smiles. To top that it is also scientifically proven that physical activity lowers stress levels and helps you to relax.

Lastly, you heal faster. A study shows that people healing from spinal surgery experience less stress and pain, and took fewer pain medications while exposed to natural light. An older study shows that a view out of a hospital window can change how quickly you recover (nature vs brick wall: nature wins).

So as you can see by all of the health benefits of getting outdoors you’re better off going for a bush walk than playing on your PS4.

It was really fun writing our Persuasive Writing.

Jesse Tree

This week the Year Fives have been doing Jesse Tree prayers. Jesse Tree prayers are prayers that we do each day and the Year Fives would read four readings each day and we would put an ornament for each reading on the a Tree called the Jesse Tree. Then after the readings two Year Fives will read out to goals for the day. I really enjoy listening to the readings.

Then we drew silhouettes of some thing that we thought that represented our time at Good Shepherd. Then we cut out black block letters that formed a word representing our time at Good Shepherd. I did a my dye background sunset colors, my silhouette was of a whale surrounded by fish and my word was 'fun'. It was really fun making my art and looking at each others art.

Sherbet Experiment

Today in class we did a science experiment. We made sherbet and tested what quantity of ingredients made the best sherbet. The ingredients we used were icing sugar, citric acid, tartaric acid and baking soda. Our first combination was 1 part icing sugar, 1 part citric acid, 1 part tartaric acid and 1 part baking soda, it was too bubbly. Our best combination was 5 part icing sugar, 0.5 part citric acid, 0.5 part tartaric acid and 0.5 part baking soda. It was really fun making sherbet and finding the best combination of ingredients.

Graduation Mass

Last night the whole school had the end of year/Graduation Mass. Since I am a Year Six I was Graduating, all the Year Sixes performed a dance that we had been practicing for ages. Potato Gun Experiment

Today we did a science experiment. We made potato guns out of straws, skewers and of course potatoes. We were trying to test what angle was best for making the potato guns shot the bits of potato. The way the potato guns were meant to work was you would stab each end of the straw into the potato so that each end of the straw had had a bit of potato in it, then with the skewer push one of the bits of potato slowly so that the air pressure builds up and then after the air pressure gets to strong the other bit of potato flies out of the straw. Well that's what was meant to happen but the straws were to bendy and when they bent they weren't air tight so the air pressure couldn't build up.

beak experiment

Today we did a science experiment. We were try to test which beaks were best for which job. The way we tested this was, with different types of forceps trying to pick up different objects, including: skittles as berry's, gummy worms as worms and paper as leaves. My group prediction was that the flat forceps would be best at picking up the paper and skittles because they can get underneath the paper and skittles we also thought that pointy forceps would be best at picking up the gummy worms because they can stab them and pick them up. My groups prediction was correct! It was really fun testing the our prediction and most importantly eating the lollies.

Platypus Infomation Report

Platypus probably the weirdest animal ever. In this information report I will tell you about why they are so strange.

Looks
Platypus look like a cross between a beaver, a duck and a otter. They have a duck’s bill, a beaver’s tail and an otter’s legs and body.

Habitat
The platypus lives in streams around eastern Australia. But they also build burrows to keep safe from predators.

Predators
The platypuses predators include hawks, eagles, owls, crocodiles, goannas, foxes and dogs.

But luckily they are not endangered.

Pregnancy
Platypus are pregnant for 10 - 14 days. They are the only mammal to lay eggs.

Diet
Platypus diet includes freshwater shrimp, annelid worms and freshwater gabby.

See! This is why I think platypus are so weird.

An angle smaller than 90 is called an acute angle. An angle between 90 and 180 degrees is called an obtuse angle. An angle over 180 degrees is called a reflex angle. I thought that it would soak into the wet one more but as the experiment went on I quickly released I was wrong because with the wet paper it was like water trying to soak into a wet sponge. so in conclusion dry paper wins!

Food Circle

In class we have been learning about having a healthy diet. We made food circles. A food circle is a pie graph of what foods you should eat more of and what food you should eat less of. You should eat more fruit, veges and carbs. Here is the one I made.

Life Cycle of a Little Blue Penguin

You know they’re cute, you know they’re tiny, but do you know their life cycle? That's what I’m going to explain.

Incubation Time
It all starts off with an egg not unlike the one of a chicken, 70mm long 55mm wide to be precise. A chick spends between 32 to 68 days in an egg before hatching.

Chicks
When a chick hatches it is helpless, completely blind and instead of have waterproof feathers they are cover from head to toe in fluff, you may think that is cute but have to rely on their parents to keep them alive. After a few hours they can open their eyes, lift up their head and beg for food. Their parents must go out get them food. When the parents find food they eat it, then when they get back they regurgitate it into the chick’s open mouth.

Molting
When a chick becomes a young penguin it starts molting, which means it’s fluffy non-waterproof feathers start to fall off and they start to grow waterproof adult feathers, once they have finished molting they can leave their parents.

Then this penguin will go mate with another penguin, they will lay an egg starting the the life cycle all over and again.

My Poem About the Storm

I hear the loud booming of the thunder.
What a big storm!

Lost - a narrative story

Once upon a time there was a penguin called Jerry and a whale called Bob they were Best friends. One day they were swimming in the antarctic ocean when they noticed the water seemed to be getting warmer and that the area they were in was not familiar. They started to panic “we’re lost!” cried Jerry. In the panic they started to swim around crazily.
If that wasn’t bad enough they both crashed into some coral. Just as they came to their senses a big giant huge massive shark called Tiny came swimming along and gave chase, Bob and Jerry swam as fast as they could. After what seemed like forever Tiny gave up because the water was getting colder and colder until it was freezing. Bob and Jerry realized that they were back in the antarctic! “What was that thing” said “Bob don’t know” said Jerry “but it sure was scary”.

In writing my class learnt about writing a memoir poem. We read one by James K Baxter called The Town. This is the one I made.

The farm was usual enough
It had a pond, a swamp, sheep, cows and a dog.
Me, myself and I did what Otis does: made plans to kill turkeys, watched TV, ran away from cows, chased sheep and played with Phoebe the dog.
Doing nothing important.
